Alabama Moon #4: Wilderness Survival Card Game

Just as Moon taught Kit and Hal what they needed to find to survive in the forest, this activity will involve using that knowledge to play a simple card game. Moon needed to gather different supplies to make fire, to eat a healthy diet, to create a shelter and to use a deer to fulfill many other daily needs. The object of the game is to be the first person to gather 4 cards in one of those categories. Of course, Moon also had to avoid being caught by the constable, so our game also has a card that needs to be avoided.

This game is played with 4 people. You will need to print out these 17 cards to play:

  • 4 fire cards (tinder, kindling, branches and starter)
  • 4 shelter cards (magnolia branches, long pole branches, marsh grass, green pine needles)
  • 4 food cards (yucca roots, snake, cattails, acorns)
  • 4 deer cards (bone tools, sinew bow string, hide clothing, leftovers for bait)
  • 1 Constable card

Print the cards on white cardstock to make the cards opaque and easier to shuffle.

Shuffle all the cards except the constable, then without looking take one card out (face down) and set it aside so no one can see it. Now shuffle remaining cards again, adding in the constable card. Deal out all the cards so each player will end up with 4 cards.

Each player (at the same time) picks a card from their hand to pass to the person on their left. All cards get passed face down at the same time. That card is added to each player’s hand. Another card is now chosen and passed to the left. Continue to pass cards till a player has collected 4 cards all from the same category. The first person to have all 4 matching cards wins! Remind the players that there will always be one category that is missing a card and that they can change the category they are collecting throughout the game based on the cards they are passed.

Play it over and over!
